PREPARING FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY OR HEADSHOT SESSION
With tips from one of the best headshot photographers in Toronto, rest assured that your photography session will go smoothly and you will look your best.
A little preparation before your shoot will be time well spent and will likely make a great difference in the outcome.
There are a few kinds of headshot photography
To help you prepare, I will want to know a little about you. Are you a business man, a CEO, an actor or entertainer, sportsman, healthcare professional, beautician, yoga instructor or........? The clothes you elect to wear for your photo, should , of course, be in keeping with the image you wish to portray. For example, a CEO would bring different clothes to the shoot , from the actor or fitness instructor.
We may meet in person for a preliminary chat or, I may ask that you send me a simple photo of yourself (just taken with your phone) Having seen you, I will be in a better position to give you wardrobe , hair and makeup tips , tailored to your individual needs. Together, we will determine the "feel" of the image needed, whether formal for business or corporate photography, or more informal, e.g. for LinkedIn portrait. We will make a decision whether to shoot in-studio or on location, whether your budget can acommodate using the services of a pro hair/makeup artist.
Meanwhile some general guidelines to consider;
Clothing you should bring to photography session
Bring a selection of clothes to choose from, simple styles, flattering colours - It is helpful to have choices. We will then make the final decision which ones to use, at the time of the shoot. Solid colours and clean lines work best. Busy patterns, logos and jewellery are distracting. You want the main emphasis to be on the subject, not his/her clothes or accessories.
Re. colour; you should avoid colours that are too close to your skin tone. e.g. a beige or white blouse on fair skin, make the wearer look washed out. Long black hair falling on shoulders covered by black garment, will disappear.
Re. fit; Try to avoid clothing that is too snug and show every curve. Not flattering. Clothes that are too tight, make the wearer look bigger.
Re. undergarments; Ladies, make sure you do not have a black bra showing through a white or beige blouse . A skin tone undergarment is the most versatile.
Re. hair; Hair freshly washed morning of or the night before your shoot please. Hair roots recently touched up, hair style and trim, one you are happy with. Stylist on set will not have time to do major changes.
Re. makeup; if we are using a makeup artist, (highly recommended) come with clean face, no makeup as all will be provided.
If you are doing your own hair/M.up, please bear in mind that less is more. It is easier to add more makeup than to take off excessive amounts. e.g. clumpy mascara. etc.
P.S. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU BRING YOUR CLOTHES HUNG ON HANGERS, IN A GARMENT BAG, TO AVOID CREASING .
Feel free to bring your favourite music to set, to get you in the mood and relax you. In addition, I will do my best to help you relax in front of the lens, using all my expertise gained over decades in front of the cameras and behind them. In a collaborative, fun session, we will succeed in capturing your true personality for the world to see, whether your LinkedIn or Social Media profile, your website, newsletter or in the family home.
